The Department of Medicine at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital invites applications from outstanding candidates with national and international stature for a leadership opportunity as Chair, Department of Medicine. The position also has the opportunity for tenure-track full time faculty appointment in Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Rank will be commensurate with experience and academic accomplishments.
Working closely with the Hospital Chief Executives, Institute Director(s), and other clinical leaders of the Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, the Chair of Medicine will have primary responsibility for advancing the tripartite mission with a primary focus of clinical excellence.
Applicants should have completed formal prior training in pediatric medicine and be board certified. In addition, applicants must be eligible for licensure in the state of Florida. Candidates must be recognized nationally and internationally for achievements and expertise in pediatric medicine, and a successful track record of publications and peer-reviewed research funding. A strong background in academic medicine, including research (basic and/or clinical) and clinical education is desired.
He/she will demonstrate the ability to lead and make complex decisions, with strong organizational skills while working collaboratively with others. The Chair will be accountable for program development, the deployment of value-based care models, quality & safety initiatives, and education and research programs associated with the Department of Medicine. In addition, in partnership with the Sr. Director, Administration, Department of Medicine, the position will involve fiscal oversight, including budgeting and financial compliance. Applicants must have an exemplary record of high quality peer reviewed publications, program development expertise, and leadership experience in dealing with internal and external stakeholders. This position requires an MD or MD/PhD degree, national recognition in the field of pediatric medicine and a minimum of ten (10) years of experience advancing the field of pediatric medicine and leadership experience in a clinical sciences department and/or academic hospital in a nationally recognized pediatric institution.

Position Summary The Chair will be responsible for the leadership, management and development of the Department of Medicine at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. Responsibilities include leadership of the physicians, advanced practice providers, and non-clinical staff of the Department. In addition, the Chair will work closely with the Chief Nursing Officer, to develop a joint clinical care model clinical services in the Department of Medicine. The Chair will oversee clinical services while leading organizational, programmatic, and academic development. In addition, the Chair will be charged with management of clinical staffing and oversight of the clinical service models, as well as financial management of the department. Will work closely with the President of All Children’s Specialty Physicians in advancing the mission of Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. The Chair will provide vision, leadership, and accountability in fulfilling the research, administrative and educational missions of Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital.
Lead and implement the clinical direction of the organization, and develop and maintain an academically successful, clinically excellent and fiscally sound department.
In partnership with Sr. Director, Administration, is accountable for leading and developing the department/financial business/strategic plan.
Responsible for analyzing the financial impact of the Department/Financial business/ strategic plan. Makes recommendations to adjust strategic direction as needed to ensure adherence to approved strategic and business plans. Keep abreast of emerging models in healthcare delivery, and identify new strategies to achieve organizational goals and objectives. Implements recommendations as appropriate.
Accountable for providing data for proposal of new programs as part of the Institute/Department Coordinating Committee leadership team.
Develops and coordinates programs and resources to assist and promote faculty growth, development, and accomplishments in the fields of education, research, professional and clinical service. Responsible for contributing to the evaluation of new programs/existing program growth, in conjunction with physician leadership and other service line directors.
Provide clinical and administrative guidance, support, and education for the Department of Medicine staff which include physicians, advanced practice providers and non-clinical staff
Identify collaborative opportunities in clinical integration with internal and external organizations.
Financial management and oversight of the Department of Medicine in partnership with Sr. Director, Administration via analysis of Department’s financial and budgetary performance rollup, including explanation and justification of actual vs. budget variations of core cost centers, with quarterly presentations to Executive Leadership.
Leadership and coordination of department specific Value Analysis Committees (VAC) to ensure safe and fiscally responsible additions, changes, and deletions to core service inventory.
Advance the Academic tripartite mission, by enhancing, and promoting research and education, via collaborations internally within the JHU organization and externally with other academic partners.
Recruit physicians (faculty and private), advanced practice providers as needed to fulfill strategic plan.
Current unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Florida
Certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties in his/her respective specialty
Minimum of 10 years of professional management experience
Demonstrated management, organizational, and interpersonal skills
Ability to solve problems and execute initiatives
Ability to work collaboratively internally and externally
Ability to move freely (standing, stooping, walking, bending, pushing and pulling) and lift up to a maximum of Fifty (50) pounds without assistance.

Works in a climate controlled office environment with daily movement throughout the Hospital campus. Use of computer throughout the work day with repetititive hand/finger motions.
