The Department of Pediatrics at Stanford University is seeking a Chief for the Division of Neonatal and Developmental Medicine. Appointment will be at the rank of Associate or Full Professor and will occur either within the University Tenure or Medical Center line.
Stanford University School of Medicine is seeking an outstanding academic neonatologist to serve as the Division Chief of Neonatal and Developmental Medicine and in a leadership role within the Johnson Center for Pregnancy and Newborn Services, the entity within Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital (LPCH) that oversees and coordinates all care for pregnant women and newborn babies at Stanford. The Division of Neonatal and Developmental Medicine provides state-of-the-art care for premature and sick newborn infants, conducts investigations to advance clinical diagnosis and treatment, and trains physicians and researchers to become leaders in those pursuits. The scope of our clinical services and scientific endeavors extends from fetal development through birth and postnatal care to long-term follow up. Our patient care, research, education, and community outreach programs advance the School of Medicine’s mission of promoting biomedical, translational, and clinical research and education through close interactions among basic scientists, innovators, clinicians, and educators while maintaining the highest standards of academic medicine and patient care. Our clinical activities in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at LPCH anchor the programs in the Division. When the NICU was established at Stanford in 1959, it was one of the first dedicated to the care of critically ill babies. The tradition of integrating clinical services with basic, translational, epidemiologic, and applied research continues uninterrupted to the present day through our participation in the Eunice Kennedy Schriver NICHD Neonatal Research Network (NRN), the California Perinatal Quality Care Collaborative (CPQCC), the Center for Advanced Pediatric Education (CAPE), the pioneering March of Dimes Prematurity Research Center, and a number of other research initiatives in our laboratories. Reporting to the Chair of Pediatrics and Physician-in-Chief at LPCH, the Division Chief of Neonatal and Developmental Medicine will be responsible for the supervision and development of clinical services, education, and research activities for members of the Division, both within the Department of Pediatrics and other relevant areas of the Stanford School of Medicine, the Stanford Health Care System including LPCH, and its partner sites. The successful candidate will also serve in a leadership role for the Johnson Center for Pregnancy and Newborn Services. This position requires a strong leader with a proven track record of collaborative clinical leadership, research administration, strategic thinking, program development, faculty recruitment and mentoring.
Faculty rank and line will be determined by the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. The successful applicant should have an M.D. or equivalent degree, and the typical candidate would be board certified in both Pediatrics and Neonatology. However, individuals from other disciplines with comparable and compatible experience, including those trained outside of the United States, will also be considered.
•The predominant criterion for appointment in the University Tenure Line is a major commitment to research and teaching. •The major criteria for appointment in the Medical Center Line shall be excellence in the overall mix of clinical care, clinical teaching, scholarly activity that advances clinical medicine, and institutional service appropriate to the programmatic need the individual is expected to fulfill. The Division includes 79 faculty and the activities of the Division are diverse. Clinical activities include neonatal services at LPCH with 74 neonatal beds, Fetal and Pregnancy Health Program, and satellite nurseries at 5 affiliated hospitalsResearch programs include: basic science laboratories, clinical trials and observational studies as part of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver NICHD Neonatal Research Network and the Pediatric Trials Network, leadership of three perinatal programs- the California Perinatal Quality Care Collaborative (CPQCC) providing a platform for statewide implementation of best practices and serving as a rich data repository for clinical epidemiology, the California Children’s Services (CCS) High Risk Infant Follow-up Program, and the California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative (CMQCC); and the Center for Advanced Pediatric Education (CAPE) offering interactive simulation-based learning experiences and conducting human performance research in obstetric, fetal, neonatal and pediatric sciences. In 2011, the March of Dimes Prematurity Research Center was launched. This project has enlisted over 130 investigators in a transdisciplinary effort to understand the causes of premature birth, with the goal of reducing both the overall rate and racial and ethnic disparities in preterm births. The program now incorporates world-class expertise in Perinatal Health Economics, Public Policy, and Global Health.
The Division trains neonatologists and provides residency and clerkship rotations in several clinical settings. The Division’s laboratories support postdoctoral and predoctoral students from a variety of disciplines. Current trainees include 8 neonatology fellows, 8 postdoctoral scholars, and 4 predoctoral PhD students. Opportunities for scholarship and research are offered to residents, medicals students, and undergraduates in clinical, basic, and translational research.
