As a TOP 10 pediatric enterprise, renowned for its outstanding clinical services, research programs and medical education, Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC (CHP) has established the highest standards of excellence in pediatric care. The talented and committed pediatric experts at CHP care for infants, children and adolescents at the main Hospital, its many neighborhood locations, and Children’s Community Pediatrics (CCP) practices each year. During FY 2015, CHP managed 12,432 inpatient admissions, 8,293 observation stays, 79,980 emergency department visits, conducted 23,534 surgical procedures and serviced more than 1,000,000 outpatient visits.
As one of the premier pediatric teaching hospitals in the world, CHP is affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) and UPSOM, and is revered for its ongoing commitment to foster cutting-edge research. Among the 19 Divisions at CHP, led by a Division Chief and a Clinical Director, the vast majority of the Division Chiefs are NIH-funded investigators ranging from basic to clinical research. Situated within the 10-acre CHP campus is the he John G. Rangos Sr. Research Center which has long been the hub of pediatric research in Pittsburgh. The 300,000-square-foot home for CHP’s research is designed around the concept of the open laboratory. It is home to the Richard King Mellon Foundation Institute for Pediatric Research, established in 2007 with a gift of $23 million from the Richard King Mellon Foundation.
The Paul C. Gaffney Diagnostic Referral Service (DRS) is comprised of 23 full-time Hospitalists. The DRS Division provides care for more than 99% of all general medical pediatric patients admitted to CHP. Clinical programs of the Division also include 24/7 coverage of an affiliated hospital for lower acuity and outpatient services including the Down Syndrome clinic, Diagnostic clinic, Feeding and Swallowing Center clinic and the Vascular Anomaly Center clinic. The DRS also has extensive involvement in medical student and resident education. DRS is the beneficiary of significant resources available with CHP/UPMC/UPSOM to foster existing and develop new research. CHP is prepared to further its position as a national and international destination for top pediatric health care. The Hospital’s vision is “to be the worldwide leader in pediatric healthcare, teaching and training, and discovery.” In order to attain this goal, CHP is recruiting several division leaders and making progress on a strategic plan that will help CHP in data analytics and workforce staffing to transform from volume to value, and developing research initiatives focused on community health, developmental neuroscience, and infection, inflammation and immunity. A cutting-edge DRS organization is essential for CHP to achieve its goals in care and scholarship, especially scholarship around education and health care delivery. Therefore, in conjunction with the UPSOM Department of Pediatrics, CHP leadership seeks to recruit the Division Chief of the Paul C. Gaffney Diagnostic Referral Service to assume this critical and prestigious appointment and mission. S/he will champion the cause of Pediatric Hospital Medicine throughout the world.
