Company History
The story of Permanente Medicine began in the California Desert during the Great Depression at Contractors General Hospital, a modest 12-bed facility where Dr. Sidney Garfield delivered medical care to workers who were building the Colorado River Aqueduct. Dr. Garfield realized a prepayment system would enable him to treat illnesses and injuries while emphasizing the importance of maintaining health and safety, and thousands of workers signed up for the program.
Back then, most people would have been hard pressed to believe this modest hospital would have been ground zero for the reinvention of health care delivery in this country. But that's what happened.
After the Aqueduct project, Dr. Garfield went to Washington state, to oversee the medical care program for 7,000 workers at industrialist Henry J. Kaiser's Grand Coulee Dam construction project. Then, during World War II, Dr. Garfield came to Richmond, Calif., to the Kaiser Shipyards, to oversee the medical care and treatment for the workers building cargo ships, aircraft carriers, and other vessels to support the war effort. By 1943, Dr. Garfield was leading a team of physicians and support that that provided medical care for 90,000 workers. Dr. Garfield's innovative health care delivery system was a success — and firmly established.
In 1945. Kaiser Permanente's medical care program was offered to the general public. Three years later, the partnership that would become The Permanente Medical Group was officially established on February 22, 1948, with seven partners: Dr. Garfield; Morris Collen, MD; Cecil Cutting, MD; A. LaMont Baritell, MD; J. Paul FitzGibbon, MD; Robert King, MD; and J. Wallace Neighbor, MD.
These physician leaders defined the principles that continue to guide Permanente Medicine today, including multispecialty group practice, prepayment, an emphasis on prevention and early detection, and physician responsibility for making optimal care decisions for their patients.
Throughout our history, providing high-quality and affordable health care has been at the heart of our success and has propelled TPMG to what we are today—a model for how care should be delivered throughout the country.
