Description

The Animal Caretaker I position is directly related to the Department of Nemours Biomedical Research and several clinical departments. The staff of the Life Science Center is responsible for the animal husbandry of all animals used for research. The position requires that the caretaker follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for the Life Science Center, under the direction of the veterinarian, and the investigators instructions regarding specific care requirements. It is also necessary for the caretaker to follow federal, state, and institutional regulations and guidelines.

Primary Duties:

1. Feed and water animals according to instructions.
2. Change bedding in cages and sanitize cages using the cage washer equipment.
3. Read and follow written instructions regarding feeding, cage cleaning, etc.
4. Clean all animal holding rooms and animal related areas, using brooms, mops, scrapers, and appropriate sanitation equipment as needed.
5. Remove trash to designated dumpster.
6. Assist in packaging frozen animal carcasses for removal by vendor.
7. Handle animals as directed by supervisor.

Qualifications:

• Previous experience with handling small and large animals
• High school diploma required
