Description
The role of the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) is one of clinical oversight and executive level responsibility for medical decisions. At Metropolitan Pediatrics, the CMO oversees clinical leadership in order to ensure and promote high quality medical care and drive targeted results in the areas of clinical quality outcomes, compliance, patient/physician satisfaction, and patient safety.
Essential Functions/Responsibilities include but not limited to:
- Function as a clinical leader and medical advisor to the Executive Board, CEO, the partnership, and the organization as a whole.
- Leads clinical quality, safety, provider culture and value-based care strategy.
- Participate in building key external relationships (e.g., insurance companies, boards, committees, other providers), including attending high level meetings and serving on appropriate external medical committees. Involved with regional and national professional associations, organizations, and third parties.
- Stays current with trends in the health care industry and the local market.
- Create an environment that supports the work of clinicians and high-quality delivery of care, while aligning with the greater system goals.
- In collaboration with administrative leaders, provide clinical focus when formulating and supporting the development of policies and procedures.
- Provide medical knowledge and insights for payer contracting issues. Work in partnership with administrative leaders to review and make recommendations about payer contracts and advocate on behalf of Metropolitan Pediatrics as needed.
- Provide clinical insights into the development, communication, and implementation of approved business plans.
- Ensures quality performance metrics are met to obtain maximum reimbursement opportunities.
- Develops, implements and maintains selected clinical care pathways and guidelines that define the standard of care at Metropolitan Pediatrics.
- Minimizes risk and unwanted variation through clinical quality review of providers. To include chairing the peer review committee, review of incident reports, chart review, provider shadowing, and other related responsibilities.
- Chairs provider working groups to review evidence, align practice and update pathways regularly.
- Serves as Compliance Officer within the organization. Including development, implementation, and approval of the Compliance program.
- Serves as the Infection Control Officer for the organization.
- In collaboration with Sr. Leadership and the board, contributes to and advises on the creation of the Strategic Plan and the regular review of its implementation.
- Provides clinical advice and expertise to programs, projects, operations and other areas of the organization that involve or are impacted by clinical quality, outcomes and process.
- Remain credible, capable, visible, approachable, and transparent to practitioners.
- Educate and guide providers to a greater level of understanding of health care challenges and opportunities.
- Effectively helps balance the needs of the organization with the needs of life situations of providers.
- Translate data into performance improvement via assessment of root cause analysis and implementation of process change.
- Ensures CEO is informed about potential areas of risk. These may include patient issues, provider compliance or employee challenges/situations.
- Participate in clinical practice with regularity, balancing leadership responsibilities with direct patient care. Will not maintain panel or participate in rounding or call but will attempt 2-4 days per month on average.

- Mental ability to conduct ongoing interpersonal interactions and analyze and solve problems is essential.
- Work collaboratively with administrative leaders and in alignment with the CEO and Executive Board decisions.
- Identifies and mentors emerging provider leaders to build long term leadership capacity for the organization.
