This is an exciting opportunity to join the Department of Pediatrics at the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons as a Hospitalist. The role is based within Columbia University Irving Medical Center, a leading academic health sciences center in partnership with a nationally recognized hospital system, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.
Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital are seeking a Hospitalist to join the Division of Pediatric Critical Care, Hospital and Palliative Medicine. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with distinguished clinical and research faculty within the division, as well as across Columbia University Irving Medical Center and the Division of Pediatric Cardiology, contributing to a highly integrated academic and clinical environment.
Successful candidates will be appointed as an instructor at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and will join a highly dedicated team providing 24/7 coverage of the Pediatric Cardiac Stepdown Unit at NewYorkPresbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital and Columbia Irving Medical Center—home to one of the nation’s premier pediatric cardiac programs. The program delivers worldclass care to infants, children, and adolescents with complex congenital heart disease, heart failure, and pulmonary hypertension.

The Pediatric Cardiac Stepdown Hospitalist (PCSH) provides inpatient care for infants, children, and adolescents with complex congenital and acquired cardiac disease admitted to the Pediatric Cardiac Stepdown Unit. As part of a 24/7 multidisciplinary team, the PCSH provides advanced monitoring and pre- and post-critical care management and supports transitions of care between the Pediatric Cardiac ICU (PCICU), acute care floors, discharge home, or chronic care facilities. To maintain familiarity with the cardiac ICU care environment, institutional systems, and care pathways, a small portion of clinical shifts may be assigned to the PCICU. The PCSH collaborates closely with pediatric and anesthesia residents and works under the supervision of pediatric faculty, including intensivists, cardiac intensivists, and pediatric cardiology specialists. The role reports directly to the Pediatric Cardiac Stepdown Medical Director.
The PCSH will provide firstline care for stepdownlevel cardiac patients in partnership with intensivists, cardiologists, surgeons, and multidisciplinary care teams.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide inpatient care for the Pediatric Cardiac Stepdown service, including day, night, weekend, and holiday coverage.
- Deliver direct patient care in collaboration with attending physicians in Pediatric Critical Care, Pediatric Cardiology, Pediatric Heart Failure and Transplantation, as well as pediatric and anesthesia residents and consulting services.
- Ensure availability during assigned jeopardy/sick-call periods to support service continuity.
- Maintain strong professional communication with patients and families, nursing staff, residents, PICU attendings, pediatric cardiologists, and the Pediatric Cardiac Stepdown Medical Director.
- Partner with scheduling and leadership teams to support consistent, high-quality coverage of the pediatric cardiac population.
- Participate in interdisciplinary discharge rounds on day shifts.
- Contribute to quality improvement and clinical process improvement initiatives.
Schedule & Coverage Structure
Clinicians follow a structured 4-week block schedule consisting of 14 day and night shifts per block, supplemented by designated jeopardy coverage. This model ensures consistent 24/7 service coverage across approximately 13 blocks annually, with weekends distributed throughout service blocks and holidays assigned via an equitable rotation.
Clinical care is delivered in close collaboration with PICU and pediatric cardiology attendings, with day-to-day supervision provided by these teams and overall supervision and direct reporting to the Pediatric Cardiac Stepdown Medical Director.

As a PCICU Hospitalist, you will provide first-line care for critically ill patients in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of intensivists, cardiologists, surgeons, and other specialists.
Requirements
- Must have a MD or DO degree and an active NYS Medical License
- Must be board certified or eligible in Pediatrics or an equivalent board certification with experience in pediatric critical care, pediatric inpatient care, and pediatric cardiology.
- Consistently strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build and sustain effective working relationships with professionals in other disciplines.
